Localizing Shogun Content

How Shogun works with Shopify Markets and the Translate and Adapt App to present market specific content and translations.

Updated over a week ago

Shogun is fully compatible with Shopify Markets and the Translate and Adapt app, allowing you to set up sub-folders to present market-specific content and your Shogun content in different languages.

Setting up your Shopify Markets

With Shopify Markets, you can create customized online shopping experiences for different customer segments. You can create markets in Shopify to target specific countries or regions, or you can group countries and regions together to simplify your expansion efforts.

Shopify's help documentation best covers this process, with those resources found at the following address in their help center.

Once you have at least one other market besides your Primary Market set up in Shopify, you may wish to translate your content to match that market.

Translate And Adapt

With the Translate & Adapt app, you can add translations to your store for products, collections, blog posts, policies, and pages.

Supporting documentation on this subject and the installation process can be found at the following location.

How does Shogun work with Translate And Adapt?

Shogun content is designed in such a way as to be compatible with Shopify's own Translate and Adapt app, with a few small caveats.

Shopify Translate & Adapt can automatically translate your content for most languages, however, do note that it does not automatically determine HTML content from code and as such will change everything it sees fit and may break your page. A couple of workarounds may need to be implemented in certain cases.

For HTML content, you need to be careful in manually translating it. Make sure you click on the “Show Editor” button on Translate & Adapt app in order to verify the appearance of the content is as expected as it will be rendered as found there on the live page when published.

Page Settings and SEO Tags created within Shogun only affect the content for the primary language. These will need to be translated using the app for each region.

Additionally, there are some page-type-specific callouts:

Product Pages

  • Product description can be edited via Shogun UI but it will only take effect for the primary language. Localized content for each language needs to be made within the Translate & Adapt app, via the Product > Description field.

  • Contents above and under your Shopify theme’s product box may need to be manually translated from the Translate & Adapt app (in the event that the page is being presented in an existing layout).

    • When choosing to auto-translate your Store, you may need to manually remove or update the Metafields > shogun.above , Metafields > shogun.below , Metafields > shogun.head and Metafields > shogun.products fields from the Translate & Adapt UI.

    • For SEO-related content, you need to manually translate the Product > Meta title, Product > Meta description and Metafields > shogun.head fields

Standard Pages

  • For Standard Pages, you may need to manually translate the Page > Content field within Translate & Adapt UI as this is HTML content. Metafields > shogun.head and Metafields > shogun.products fields should be left untouched.

    • For SEO-related content, you need to manually translate the Page > Meta title, Page > Meta description and Metafields > shogun.head fields

Blog Pages

  • For Blog posts, you may need to manually translate the Blog post > Content field within Translate & Adapt UI. Metafields > shogun.head and Metafields > shogun.products fields should be left untouched.

    • For SEO-related content, you need to manually translate the Blog post > Meta title, Blog post > Meta description and Metafields > shogun.head fields

Is there any Shogun content that can't be translated via Translate and Adapt?

Theme Sections are not currently supported for translations, on both Shogun and Shopify Theme Editor.

Note: This also affects the ability to properly translate links when they are included in a Shogun section.

Links manually created via the HTML Component need to be changed for each language where you customized the content. If you’re using the Translate & Adapt app, you would need to manually change those up within your Shopify Admin UI or handle it via this workaround.
